Married on Purpose - The Game Plan

marriage married on purpose smalley marriage radio Aug 21, 2018

  1. Without a clear and defined purpose (which we will from now on refer to as your DREAM) how can you expect your marriage to be all it can be? If you do not know where you are headed together as a couple, or what kind of legacy you want to leave through your children and moments of your marriage, then how can you expect to truly enjoy your marriage. Spending day after day in a bottomless pit of indecision, confusion, and lack of a dream will (or already has) take a huge toll on your marriage happiness and enjoyment.
    1. “A man without a vision is a man without a future. A man without a future will always return to his past.” (P.K. Bernard)
  2. Praying together about your Dream Statement
    1. Prayer is an important element to this study being a successful experience. Prayer is also important on a global level as well for your relationship. Without prayer, your relationship is missing out on God's direction and encouragement. Prayer is our intimate time with God and it WILL draw you closer with each other and with God.
    2. Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. 6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”
  3. “With a clear vision of what we can become in Christ, no ocean of difficulty is too great. Without it, we rarely move beyond our current boundaries.”  Lynn Anderson, “They Smell Like Sheep: Spiritual Leadership for the 21st Century”
    1. Psalms 20:4 “May he grant your heart’s desires and make all your plans succeed.”
    2. “Vision is the bridge between the present and the future. Without it we perish or go “unrestrained,” as the New American Standard Bible puts it. Vision gives pain a purpose. Those without vision spend their lives taking the path of least resistance as they try to avoid discomfort. The level of sacrifice that a vision requires will determine the size of people who follow. Sacrifice separates the small from the great.” Kris Vallotton
  4. Develop a DREAM statement (vision)
    1. What Diamonds do you want included in your Dream statement?
      1. What do you want to be known for? When people look at you as a couple, what do they see?
        1. passionate missions volunteers (or full time)
        2. strong community leaders
        3. small group leaders
        4. mentors to younger couples
        5. bible knowledge
        6. fun couple
        7. adventurous
        8. Etc.
      2. Now, which ones need to stay and which ones need to go?  Your dream statement can’t be an unrealistic list of too many things.
        1. What’s your top 3 or 4 Diamonds
    2. Our DREAM statement
      1. Michael’s
        1. To honor God and others by relentlessly pursuing family, community and the joy that only comes from Jesus Christ.
      2. Amy’s
        1. To honor God and others with everything we have, serving others with joyful gladness, actively seeking God in authenticity, aspiring for self-awareness and freedom.
      3. Our official combined Dream Statement
        1. To honor God and others by relentlessly pursuing authentic relationships, valuing hospitality, self-awareness, diversity, adventure, joy and freedom in Christ.
  5. “Then the LORD answered me and said, ‘Record the vision and inscribe it on tablets, that the one who reads it may run. For the vision is yet for the appointed time; it hastens toward the goal and it will not fail. Though it tarries, wait for it; for it will certainly come, it will not delay” - Habakkuk 2:2-3
