Constant

Become Who You Were Made to Be

An 8-Lesson Online Course by Dr. Michael Smalley

The Pattern You Cannot See Is Running Your Life

There is a reason you keep having the same fight with your spouse. There is a reason your kids tense up before you walk in the door. There is a reason you cannot break the loop with your mom, your friend, your boss, or your own head.

The pattern is running.

You did not choose it. You inherited it. You absorbed it. You built it as a kid to survive a world you could not control. And now, decades later, the same pattern is quietly running your relationships, your reactions, and your inner life. You cannot see it because you have been inside of it your whole life. It is just the air you breathe.

But the people you love can see it. They feel it. They brace for it. They scan your face. They read your tone. They learn what to bring up and what to avoid. They love you and they also have to manage you.

What if it could be different?

Become the Kind of Person People Are Drawn To

There is a version of you whose love can be counted on. Whose presence settles a room instead of charging it. Whose word means something. Whose nervous system is regulated enough that the people around you can finally relax.

That is the kind of person people want to be around.

That is who your spouse, your kids, your friends, and your coworkers are drawn to. Not because of what you do. Because of who you are when you walk in. The constant breathes life into a room. The variable sucks it out. We all know which one we want to be around. The work of Constant is becoming the one we want to be around ourselves.

When you become a constant, people choose proximity to you. They want more of you, not less. The closer they get, the more they relax instead of brace.

What Constant Is

Constant is an 8-lesson online course built around one central truth. You cannot change what you cannot see. And what you can finally see, you can finally change.

Across eight lessons, we map every major unhealthy pattern running in a typical adult life.

The patterns in your closest relationships.

The patterns inside your own head.

The patterns in your spiritual life.

The patterns in your body that fire before you have time to think.

Then we build something new in their place.

This is the integration of two bodies of work. The foundational work my dad, Dr. Gary Smalley, gave the church. Beliefs run the heart. And my own work as a coach, pastor, and recovering human being. The body and the nervous system are the reason most belief work fails on its own. You can know the truth and still react from the wound.

Constant puts those two bodies of work together and adds the next step. Pattern creation. Not just naming what is broken. Building something new in its place.

The Eight Lessons

Lesson 1: The Variable Life

The honest mirror. Where variability came from. What it has been costing you. The gentle but real naming of the pattern most of us have been running our whole lives.

Lesson 2: The Operating System

The beliefs sitting underneath your behavior. The lies you absorbed without consenting to them. The 1987 software running in a 2025 life.

Lesson 3: The Gap Between Knowing and Doing

Why "just trust God" never worked on its own. Where head meets heart meets body. The reason knowing the right thing is not the same as living it.

Lesson 4: Relational Patterns

The dirty dance. Triangulation. Generational repetition. The peacekeeper, the performer, the helper who is never helped. The loops running in your closest relationships.

Lesson 5: Internal Patterns

The voice in your head that never lets up. The rumination, the performance, the shame spiral, the catastrophizing. Why the inner critic gets loudest at the doorway of growth.

Lesson 6: Spiritual and Body Patterns

The hidden engine. Where the performance gospel meets the freeze response. Why how you experience God is shaped by how your body has been wired, and what to do about it.

Lesson 7: Pattern Creation

The "now we build" lesson. The neuroscience of new patterns. The discipline of repetition. The footpath through the woods that eventually becomes the road.

Lesson 8: Becoming a Constant

The integration of everything we have built. What a constant actually looks like in real life. Not perfect. Safe. The kind of person your family can finally relax around.

Who This Is For

This course was built for people who are tired of running the same loops.

✓ The spouse who keeps having the same fight and is ready to do something different

✓ The parent who wants to break the generational pattern with their kids

✓ The pastor or ministry leader carrying things they have not let themselves name

✓ The person in recovery who wants the spiritual and practical work in one place

✓ The high-achiever whose head knows the truth but whose life has not caught up

✓ The single person trying to become someone worth choosing

✓ The believer who is tired of pretending and ready for honest work

If you are looking for a quick fix, this is not it. If you are ready to do real work that produces real fruit, you are in the right room.

👥 Perfect for Small Groups, Church Classes, and Communities

Constant works beautifully as a group study. The structure is built for it. Eight lessons. Practical work between sessions. Discussion questions in every "mirror" section. Biblical anchors that hold up in any church setting.

Use it for:

Small Groups. Eight-week curriculum with built-in discussion prompts.

Sunday School or Church Classes. Adult, young adult, or recovery-focused settings.

Marriage Ministries. Couples doing the work side by side.

Men's or Women's Groups. Inner work that goes deeper than surface-level study.

Recovery Communities. Material that integrates faith and practical change.

Ministry Teams. Leaders doing the work they invite others into.

Group leaders can use the audio version to set the table, then move into discussion. Or have everyone read the lesson during the week and come together to process. Either rhythm works.

About Dr. Michael Smalley

I have spent thirty years working with couples and individuals through marriage intensives, coaching, and recovery work. I have a Ph.D. in Psychology. I am an ordained pastor. I have written books. I run the Smalley Institute.

I am also someone who has lived a variable life and is doing the slow work of becoming a constant. I have been through my own seasons of healing, hiding, hard-won lessons, and the kind of failure that finally makes a person willing to do whatever it takes.

I teach from inside the work, not from the other side of it. This course is the integration of everything I have learned, lived, taught, and survived. It is honest. It is biblical. It is practical. And it is built for people who are tired of being handed easy answers when they know the real work is harder than that.

What Makes Constant Different

Most Christian self-help focuses on belief alone. Most personal growth focuses on behavior alone. Constant brings them together.

You will not be told to pray harder. You will be shown how the spiritual life and the practical life are designed to work together.

You will not be shamed for your patterns. You will be shown how they formed and how they can be rewired.

You will not be sold a fantasy of arrival. You will be invited into the lifelong work of becoming.

You will not get lectures. You will get stories, scripture, and practical work you can use this week.

Ready to See What Has Been Running You?

You were made to be a constant.

The patterns you carry are not who you are. They are what you absorbed before you knew you had a choice. And what was absorbed can be seen. And what can be seen can be changed.

This course will not fix you. You are not broken. This course will help you see what has been running you, name what needs to change, and build the patterns that finally make you the kind of person others are drawn to.

Your family is waiting. Your friends are waiting. Your future is waiting.

So is the version of you that was there all along.
